Ramona Black

Ramona Magdalena
Black, the daughter of
Joseph and Magdalena
(Hilzendager) Heilman
was born on August 9,
1936 in Rugby, North
Dakota. She died at the
age of 85 years on Thurs-
day, March 10, 2022 at the
Benedictine Living Com-
munity Center in Garris-
on, North Dakota.
Ramona was raised in
the farm home of her
parents in rural Rugby.
She was baptized and
confirmed in the Little
Flower Catholic Church
in Rugby. She attended a
rural school near her
home and completed her
education, graduating
from Rugby High School,
the class of 1954. While
attending a dance in Rug-
by, Ramona met Pius
Black from Karlsruhe. On
April 17, 1956, she was
united in marriage to Pius
at the Little Flower
Catholic Church in Rug-
by. The couple made their
home on Pius’s family
farm near Karlsruhe and
were blessed with four
children. They had a
dairy farm until 1981,
raised small grains and
after selling their dairy
cattle, they raised pure-
bred Simmentals. Ramona
helped on the ranch, but
was known for her great
cooking and baking. Ac-
cording to many, she was
the best cook and baker in
the world and was always
happy to feed anyone at
any time. She enjoyed
feeding their hired men,
entertaining her friends,
playing cards and was al-
ways jolly and happy.
Ramona was musically in-
clined and loved to play
the accordion and dance,
especially the polka and
waltz.
