Patricia Joyce (Avens)
Mears age 97 of Rugby,
North Dakota died Thurs-
day, March 4, 2021 at the
Heart of America Care
Center in Rugby. Pat was
born October 18, 1923 in
Rugby, the daughter of
Edward Barney Asleson
Avens and Vida Alma
(Robinson) Avens. She
was raised on her parent’s
farm, north of Pleasant
Lake where she attended
rural school and graduat-
ed from Rugby High
School, the class of 1941.
Pat was united in mar-
riage on October 25, 1943
to James E. Mears. The
couple made their home,
raised their family, and
farmed north of Pleasant
Lake until retiring into
Rugby. A loving wife,
mother, grandmother,
homemaker and friend,
Pat worked outside the
home at the Sales Ring
Cafe and in the kitchen of
the Haaland Home. Hos-
pitality was one of Pat’s
greatest gifts; an immacu-
late housekeeper along
with being a wonderful
cook who kept a freezer
full of cookies and bars
for her hungry grandkids.
She is survived by
daughters, Judy Holliday
of Montesano, Washing-
ton, and Betty Triplett of
Rugby; eight grandchil-
dren, Larry (Sheila)
Braaten, Brian (Julie)
Braaten, BJ (Randy)
DeHerrera, Shannon Hol-
liday, Ryan Holliday, Ja-
son (Heidi) Triplett, Kal
(Lindsay) Triplett, and
Kurt (Jena) Triplett;
son-in-law, Gene Braaten;
sister-in-law, Luella
Avens. She is also sur-
vived by 14 great
grandchildren; 1
great-great granddaughter;
several nieces, nephews,
and other relatives. She
was preceded in death by
her husband, (September
2, 1994); daughter, Jane
Braaten (October 30,
2001); grandson, Randy
James Braaten, (June 22,
1987); three brothers; four
sisters; and her parents.
A service of Remem-
brance will be held in the
summer of 2021 at the
Persilla Watts Cemetery,
Rugby all to be an-
nounced when finalized.
