A new pizza restaurant opened in Rugby on Oct. 16 to an enthusiastic community eager to try an assortment of specialty toppings and broasted chicken.

Crowds spilled into the parking lot of Kj’s Pizza Place opening day and employees took a steady stream of phone and counter orders for take-out pizzas and chicken dinners.

Rugby residents John and Kim Lovcik opened the restaurant after noticing a need for a family pizza parlor after the closure of other restaurants in the building that once housed a Pizza Hut on Highway 2.

Kim Lovcik said diners could choose from a variety of toppings to make their favorite pizza. “We have nine specialty pizzas, then you can create your own,” she said.

One specialty pizza bears the name Dumpster Diver. “I’d say that’s our most popular pizza,” Lovcik said with a laugh. “It’s got cheese, beef, Italian sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, green olives, black olives, red onions and green peppers. Everything goes into the dumpster, so this has everything.”

The mouth-watering pizza itself makes people hungry rather than turning their thoughts to dumpsters.

The Lovciks are no strangers to running restaurants in Rugby. “We had the Dairy Queen for 10 years,” Lovcik said. “Then we sold it to our son, Jarret, and his wife, Brittany, in 2018.”

“We thought Rugby could use another restaurant,” Lovcik said of their decision to open Kj’s Pizza Place. “Rugby was good to us the first go-around so we thought we’d try again.”

The restaurant gets its name from Kim and John Lovcik’s initials.

Lovcik described the first two weeks at Kj’s Pizza Place as “busy.”

“We’re still trying to get things organized and figure things out but we’re slowly coming around.”

Lovcik said she likes the feedback she’s received so far about Kj’s. “We’re hearing people say they’re glad to see this place open again and Rugby needs another restaurant,” she said. “We’re hearing the food is great and the service is great,”

“Rugby is a great community,” she added. “They were good to us when we ran the Dairy Queen – very supportive.”
