The third seeds from Bismarck had their hands full with the sixth seeds from Bottineau-Rugby in quarterfinal action at the 2024-2025 Western Dakota Association Boys Hockey Tournament on Thurs., Feb. 20..
The Legacy Sabers outshot the Braves 27-16 with goals in the first and third periods of play for the 2-0 win. The first score of the contest was just under one minute of play in the first and the seconds score was at the 16:42 mark of the third- close to the final minute of play.
The Sabers had one penalty in the first period of play and four in the second period compared to the Braves with only one penalty in the second period of play.
No. 6 Bottineau-Rugby 6, No. 7 Williston 0
The Braves bounced back from the quarterfinal loss to No. 3 Legacy with a win over the seventh seeds from Williston at the 2024-2025 Western Regional Boys Hockey Tournament on Fri., Feb. 21. The Braves outshot the Coyotes 36-12 in a game that was slow to start on the offensive end of either side of the ice.
With half of the first period of play ticked away, the teams each had one shot on goal. As each time had one penalty in the second half of the first period of play, the shots on goal began to take place with Bottineau-Rugby edging Williston 9-7 in the first period shots on goal.
Grady Glasner found the net for the first score of the game on a power play goal. Brody Nordmark and Tukker Fedje had the assists for the Braves. Gavin Bartsch scored less than 30-seconds later on the even strength shot for the 2-0 Bottineau-Rugby lead. Bryant Bohl had the assist on the score.
The Braves added three more scores in the second period of play as Bottineau-Rugby outshot Williston 13-3 in the second. Payton Getzlaff found the net at the 4:16 mark with Fedje and Khaliel Abdurrahman on the assists. At the 7:13 mark, Getzlaff added another score with Landon Siemens on the assist. Getzlaff hit his third goal of the second period at the 13:13 mark with Kaden Bristol and Siemens on the assists and the 5-0 Braves lead.
Nordmark found the net for the sixth goal of the game at the 5:02 mark of the third period. Fedje and Getzlaff had the assists for Bottineau-Rugby as they shutout the Coyotes for the win. Williston had three penalties in the second and two in the third periods of play. The Braves had one in each of the periods to limit power play scoring opportunities for Williston.
Mason Lynnes worked the net for Bottineau-Rugby and was a perfect 12-12 on saves in the game for the shutout.
Bottineau-Rugby 3, Jamestown 2
The Braves scored two goals in the first and one in the second period of play at the West Region Boys Hockey Tournament on Sat., Feb. 22, at the Maysa Arena to take the win over the Blue Jays. They made the trip to the state tournament on Thursday, Feb. 27.
The Blue Jays had 27 shots on goal compared to 25 for the Braves, but Bottineau-Rugby made their shots count by one more in the win.
Casey Freeman, assisted by Khaliel Abdurrahman, put the Braves on the scoreboard at the 55-second mark of the first period. Jamestown added their score at the 5:20 mark to tie the game at 1-1.
Grady Glasner scored for Bottineau-Rugby at the 9:37 mark with assists going to Bryan Bohl and Gavin Bartsch for the 2-1 lead.
Brody Nordmark scored at the 11:22 mark of the second period with Tukker Fedje on the assist for the only score in the second. Jamestown scored at the 5:34 mark of the third period for the 3-2 final score.
Neither team had penalties in the first period of play while each had one in the second period and Jamestown had one penalty in the third period. All goals scored were even strength goals by both teams.
Mason Lynnes worked the net for the Braves and stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced. Bottineau-Rugby faced Grand Forks Central in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament.
