Panthers pull away with road win against Nedrose

The Nedrose Cardinals hosted the Rugby Panthers for a girls basketball game Monday, Jan. 27. After a long, close game the Panthers pulled away with the 50-43 road win.

The first quarter started with Lily Nelson for the Cardinals and Alli Blessum for the Panthers jumping for the ball. Rugby took the first possession of the game.

The first quarter was back and forth with Ashley Roberts leading the score for Nedrose. Roberts brought in 11 points for the Cardinals in the first period.

Blessum brought in six points, the most points for the Panthers in the first quarter. Kaitlyn Sullivan followed behind with three more points for the Rugby. Elise Fahnenstock and Sarah Schmaltz brought in the final four points for the Panthers in the first quarter.

Nelson brought in two more points for Nedrose. The first quarter ended with a 13-13 tie.

The Cardinals struggled to push past the Panthers defense in the second quarter of the game and had only one scorer the entire time. Nelson earned the Cardinals eight points, including four points from the free throw line.

Lacie Deplaze made a 3-pointer and one free throw point to start off the Panthers scoring in the second period of the game. Sullivan made four more points for Rugby, followed by teammate Blessum who brought in three more points. Avery Santjer and Schmaltz brought in the final four points to give the lead to the Panthers ending the second quarter of the game.

After the short half time break both teams came back ready to play some basketball.

The Cardinals started the third quarter with Nelson bringing in four points from in the lane. Santjer made five points for Rugby to keep their short lead.

Nelson made five more points from the free throw line in the third quarter. Once again Nelson brought in the only points for the Cardinals.

Blessum and Fahnenstock each made two more points for the Panthers. Rugby ended the third quarter 37-30 over the Cardinals.

Nedrose worked to tie the score with two minutes left in the final quarter of the game. The Cardinals’ Nelson brought in six more points. Hannah Beuchler made a three pointer followed by two points from both Roberts and Maecey McKibbin for the Cardinals. Nedrose’s efforts tied the score 43-43 with only two minutes left.

The Panthers pulled off the win and with only two minutes left as they made seven more points to take the lead. Fahnenstock earned Rugby four points, Deplaze made two points with moments left to take the 50-43 win over the Cardinals.
