Rugby track team continues to prepare for state meet

The Rugby Panthers spent Saturday, May 4, at the Carrington Kiwanis Lions Varsity Track and Field meet where the girls team outscored the nearest competition by 30 points and the boys finished in third place.

The teams are in the final stretch of preparations for the end of track season that is just a couple short weeks away. The goal is to be ready to compete at the 2024 NDHSAA Combined Class A and B Boys and Girls Track & Field State Meet. The meet will be held May 23-25 at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck.

Rugby senior Riley Bonebrake continued her preparation for state with a win in the shot put with a 32-feet, 11-inch mark as well as first place in the discus with a 104-feet, 10-inches that was a personal best for the season. Fellow senior Haylee Jundt was third in the shot put with a 32-05.5 and eighth in the discus with a mark of 84-9 while freshman Olivia Belisle was 13th in the discus and 16th in the shot put.

Rugby sophomore Hannah Senechal won the 800-meter race with a personal best of 2 minutes, 24.52 seconds, while senior Amelia Shepard won the 1600-meter run with a personal best time of 5:50.67 at the meet. Rugby had a clean sweep in the 1600-meter run with eighth grader Kathryn Kuntz taking second with a 6:07.13, also a personal best, and junior Ashlyn Dibble in third place with a 6:14.91 time.

Senior Brooklyn Bartsch was second in the 800-meter run with a 2:30.39 and second in the 400-meter run with a session best 1:02.69 time. Freshman Brekkyn Thompson finished in second place in the long jump with a 14-6 mark and triple jump with a personal best of 32-8 mark. Junior Lacie Deplazes was fourth in the triple jump with a 32-04.25 at the meet.

Sophomore Bostyn Bailey finished in fourth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.71 and fifth place in the 100-meter dash with a 14.41 mark.

Bartsch and Senechal were joined by freshman Sam Blessum and junior Rylah Hager to win the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:20.86 while the team of Bailey, Blessum, Thompson and junior Mattisyn Jacobson finished second in both the 4×100-meter relay and 4x 200-meter relay with times of 53.75 and 1:54.41 respectively.

For the boys, freshman Brayden Green won the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:02.42 and seventh grader Zeke Puenta was third in the same event with a time of 5:20.34, a personal best for him. Green also finished second in the 3200 -meter run with a time of 10:47.45, a personal best.

Senior Cy Walker won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.72 seconds with freshman Hudson Torr in seventh with a personal best time of 20.48. Walker would finish in sixth place and Torr would finish in ninth place in the 300-meter hurdles as well.

Eighth grader Tayler Lunde was second in the triple jump with a 35-11.5 which was a personal best and freshman Keifer Fritz was third with just 1.25-inches between the two teammates. Sophomore Caleb Shaan finished in sixth place and eighth grader Coy Walker was seventh in the same event.

Coy Walker also finished in sixth place in the high jump and seventh in the long jump for the Panthers. Rugby freshman Jove Risovi was third in the pole vault clearing 9 feet, 6 inches at the meet as well. Freshman Bryce Stewart had a personal best in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:53.09 for fifth place.
