Rugby sees state championships in girls’ shot put, relay

Rugby first responders escorted a bus carrying state champions home from the North Dakota High School Activities Association State Track Meet the evening of May 27.

Aboard were North Dakota 4×800 Girls’ Class B Relay Champions Amelia Shepard, Brooklyn Bartsch, Mikaylee Livedalen and Hannah Senechal. Also aboard was 2023 State Girls’ Class B Shot Put Champion Riley Bonebrake.

The Panthers finished in 12th place among 37 teams from throughout North Dakota in the boys’ division and 10th among 45 teams in the girls’ division overall.

In the boys’ events, Brody Schneibel placed third in the javelin throw with a distance of 171 feet, 4 inches.

In the 4×200-meter relay event, the team of Kristian Fritz, Cole Fahnestock, Logan Gronvold and William Lundberg placed fifth with a time of one minute, 31.90 seconds.

Fritz, Fahnestock, Gronvold and Lundberg finished in eighth place in the 4×100-meter event with a time of

Gronvold placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.87 seconds.

Fahnestock placed seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.35 seconds.

In jump events, Bryceton Deplazes took 17th place in the long jump with a distance of 19 ft., 11.25 inches.

In distance events, Rugby’s Austin Dibble placed 12th for the boys in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:35.35, and 19th in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4.44.85.

Rugby’s Hannah Senechal took sixth place for the girls in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:25.34.

Other top finishers for the girls include a fourth place finish of one minute, 0.44 seconds in the 400-meter dash and a seventh place triple jump for Ashley Martodam of 34 ft., 3.75 inches.

Coach Scott Grochow said the Panthers boys’ team also made additions to the Rugby High School Track and Filed Top Ten List, which tracks fastest times and longest distances.

On that list, Fahnestock holds the number seven spot in the 400-meter dash; Fritz, Fahnestock, Gronvold and Lundberg have the second place spot for the 4×200-meter relay; Dibble has the number 10 rank for the 1600-meter run; Schneibel has third place for the javelin throw, and Fritz, Fahnestock, Gronvold and Lundberg have the number eight spot for the 4×100-meter relay.

In a message to the Tribune, Grochow said, “Despite the weather I thought it was a very good season. We had lots of personal records either at Regional(25) or State (nine) . Anytime you have that happen it has been a good season.”

Girls’ Coach Bill Jansen said, “Anytime you get multiple state champions it is a successful state meet. We were very close to placing in many events and had we been able to make them scoring events our team results would have been better.”

” It was an exciting state meet and I feel our athletes gained some very valuable experience for next year,” he added. “We had a young team this season and I am excited for next season to continue to get better and hopefully improve our state finish.”

Discus: Bonebrake, 103 ft. 9 in.; Jundt, 90 ft. 7 in.

Long jump: Peyton Hauck, 16 ft. 7.5 in.; Ashley Martodam, 15 ft. 5.25 in.; Hallie Hauck, 15 ft. 3.75 in.

Triple jump: Martodam, seventh place, 34 ft., 3.25 in.; Lacie Deplazes, 33 ft. 6 in.

High jump: Janikka Miller, 5 ft. 0 in.; Savannah McCall, 4 ft. 8 in.
