Rugby High School track and field athletes finished the first meet of their season with two first place team finishes, ten first place individual scores and one broken meet record in Minot March 31.

The varsity teams participated in the Central North Dakota Conference Indoor Meet in the Minot State University Dome.

Snow and ice covered the parking lot and fields on the MSU campus, but the Dome’s large interior provided ample space for a running track, large foam pads for pole vaulting and a sand pit for long jump events.

Rugby High senior William Lundberg used the indoor track to set a new meet record for the 55-meter dash, finishing in 6.28 seconds, 11 hundredths of a second ahead of the 2013 record set by Rugby’s Nigel Hagness.

“It’s exciting. It’s a good start to my senior year so far,” Lundberg said after the event. “I don’t know what the actual result is going to be when the 55 (meter event) is over, but hopefully, the rest of the season goes well, and everyone on our team stays healthy, and we have a good season.”

Teammate Austin Dibble finished with a first-place time in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 7.13 seconds in the 4×160-meter relay.

Lundberg ran as the anchor on a team with Cy Walker, Logan Gronvold and Cole Fahenstock to take first place in the event with a time of 1 minute, 18.08 seconds.

Rugby pole vaulter Bryceton Deplazes cleared the bar at 10 feet, 6 inches for first place. He also took first place in the boys’ triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, 4 inches.

Varsity athletes on the girls’ team also place first in 10 events and scored in the number one spot over 13 other schools.

Distance runner Hannah Senechal finished first in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 51.89 seconds. Senechal ran in the set position for the 4×400-meter relay, finishing first with teammates Hallie Hauck, Mikayleee Livedalen and Brooklyn Bartsch with a time of 4 minutes, 37.08 seconds.

In the 4×800-meter relay, Senechal again ran the set position on a team consisting of Amelia Shepard, Livedalen and Bartsch to take first place with a time of 11 minutes, 3.35 seconds.

Rugby’s Peyton Hauck took first place with a jump of 17 feet in the girls’ high jump event.

Shot putter Riley Bonebrake threw for a distance of 32 feet, 10 inches for first place in that event.

“It was great for our runners to get on a track and the jumpers to get into a pit and all our athletes to get to compete,” Girls’ Track Coach Bill Jansen said in an email after the event. “I was happy with what I saw and the results that we had. The kids now have an idea of where their competition fitness is and what they need to work on.”

“We coaches now have a better idea of the level of the kids right now and what we need to have them work on to get better,” he said, adding he was “looking forward to the snow leaving and being able to get outside!”
