Panthers qualify for state at chilly regional track meet

By Sue Sitter - | May 28, 2022

Sue Sitter/PCT Rugby Panthers’ Janikka Miller clears the high jump bar to qualify for state at the North Central Regional Meet on May 21.

Athletes bundled up for the North Central Region Class B Track and Field Meet held at Rugby’s Johnsen Field on May 21, but the Rugby Panthers shook off the cold to punch their tickets to state.

Panthers’ boys and girls” teams placed first at the meet, topping 10 other schools from the region.

Temperatures stayed in the low- to mid-40-degree range throughout the day.

High jumper Janikka Miller, who wore a black winter coat until her time to qualify came, said, “It’s not the best weather today.”

At times, sleet pellets bounced off the blacktop near the orange high jump mat.

Miller easily cleared the 4 foot, 9 inch bar to qualify as an individual in the high jump, but she said she didn’t see a personal best.

Austin Dibble, winner of the boys’ 1600-meter and 3200-meter races, said the weather made the day more fit for cross-country than track. Dibble’s place in the top three finishers gave him a berth at state.

William Lundberg, winner of the 200-meter dash, said he wasn’t expecting the cold snap, “But, you’ve just got to get used to it and run a good race as much as you can regardless.”

Lundberg wrapped a blanket over his shoulders as he waited for his official time.

The Panthers showed strong finishes in the boys’ relay events. Each team entered in the event qualified for state.

Coach Bill Jansen walked from event to event, congratulating athletes on both the boys’ and girls’ teams. He said he was pleased with the Panthers’ performance in the event, despite the weather.

“We won’t know specifically what happens until the end. But I think we’re having a good meet,” he said.

“This is more of a distance day,” said Jansen, who coaches girls’ track and both girls’ and boys’ cross-country. “The distance kids will do well today. Sprinters and jumpers, not so much. It’s hard to warm up and run real fast when it’s in the 40s. But I think our kids are handling it and performing in it pretty well.”

Jansen noted the weather forecast called for temperatures to climb to the 70s by the time the team traveled to Bismarck for the state meet from May 26 through 28.

“Hopefully, we have better (performance) at state. We haven’t really had that kind of weather all year, so that will be another adjustment, how to deal with warmer weather,” he added.

“There are different things you have to do to compete and have energy when it’s hot, because you sweat more and all that, so you need to keep hydrated. It’s a different thing,” he said.

“Hopefully, we’ll adjust. We have in the past,” he added. “Everyone else will be dealing with it, too.”

The girls continued a strong trend of individual qualifying times in most track events, especially distance events. First place in the 1600-meter run went to Brooklyn Bartsch. The relay team of Mikaylee Livedalen, Amelia Shepard, Ella Jacobson, and Bartsch took first place and qualified in the 4×800-meter relay.

Kory Vetsch qualified as an individual for the pole vault for the boys’ team.
