Panthers head for track and field regionals with more state qualifiers

By Sue Sitter - | May 21, 2022

Sue Sitter/PCT Rugby’s Austin Dibble rounds the track in the 800-meter run at the Charlie Hanneman Memorial Meet at Rugby High School, May 16.

Athletes from the Rugby Panthers track and field team took a last chance to qualify for state in their regular season at the Charlie Hanneman Memorial Meet, held at Rugby High School on May 16.

The Panthers girls and boys saw top scores in the meet, where most of the 16 schools competing came from the western part of the state.

The Rugby boys placed first with 156 points, while the girls topped all teams in their division with a team score of 201.

Brooklyn Bartsch, Janikka Miller, Hallie Hauck, and Taylor Mayer saw qualifying scores in their events.

Bartsch qualified for state in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 25.31. Miller qualified in the high jump with a 5 foot, 1 inch measurement. Mayer and Hauck both qualified in the long jump, each landing a 16 foot, 6 inch jump.

Kory Vetsch qualified for the Panthers with a pole vault of 12 feet in the boys’ division.

The boys scored first in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, 4×200-meter relay, and 4×800-meter relay. However, their times fell just short of qualifying for state in those events.

“It was as close to a good track & field day as we’ve had so far this season,” girls’ coach Bill Jansen said of the slightly warm, breezy weather during the meet.

“There were a number of good performances and the kids are moving in the right direction,” he added. “Hopefully Saturday will not be a terrible day and we will get a few more things qualified at the region meet.”

Rugby High Class of 2021 members J.D. Matehs and Trey Welstad returned from their first year of college to help with the jump events. Matehs, who attends Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., said he is on the track team for the school. Welstad, who does not participate in college sports, attends Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz.

Both said they were glad to be back in Rugby and help their alma mater.

The Panthers host the North Central Regional Meet on Saturday, May 21. The meet begins at 11:30 a.m.

Results for the Charlie Hanneman Memorial Meet are on Tribune’s website.
