Panthers wrestlers see top finishes at Northern Lights Invitational

After a canceled home tournament on Jan. 13-15, Rugby Panthers’ wrestling team headed for the Northern Lights Invitational in Rolla, where two Panthers finished in second place in their weight classes.

Austin Schneibel, a sophomore, finished second in the 182-pound class when he defeated Pembina County North’s Grady Hornung by fall in three minutes, 34 seconds in the semi-final round of the tourney. Schneibel fell to Northern Lights’ Isaac Herbel in the championship round in 2:36.

In the 285-pound class, Rugby’s Landon Zietz placed second after defeating Northern Lights’ Sean Counts in 1:02, Gavin Symington of Pembina County North in 1:38 and Rugby’s Ian Towe in 1:26. Towe would place fifth for Rugby. Zietz fell to Bryce Prouty of Northern Lights in the final round.

In the 106-pound class, junior varsity wrestler Bryce Stewart placed fourth after falling to Northern Lights’ Bode Henderson, Kenmare-Bowbells’ Aiden Meiln and Pembina County North’s Zeke Symington.

In the 132-pound class, Bailey Zachmeier wrestled teammate Bryson Amyotte, defeating Amyotte by fall in 4:26. Amyotte would finish in sixth place, while Zachmeier finished fifth after falling to Larimore’s Kolton Moen in 3:14; Northern Lights’ Havlin DeLong in 2:52; Pembina County North’s Trevor Hinkle in 0:34 and William Cook from Kenmare-Bowbells by 7-1 decision.

In the 132-pound junior varsity class, Rugby’s Elijah Towe placed fourth after defeating Pembina County North’s Brian Tollefson in a forfeit.

In the 145-pound class, Rugby’s Aiden Jensen took third place.

In the 160-pound class, Rugby’s Riley Odden finished fourth after defeating Larimore’s Eric Hoffmann by 12-3 major decision. Odden also defeated Pembina County North’s Ashton Vaughn by fall in 3:05. Odden fell to Northern Lights’ Cole Henderson in 5:02 and Pembina County North’s Matthew Keena in 2:41.

The Panthers would travel even farther from home for a test in Mandan, when they would wrestle against class A schools in a triangular before heading to New Salem-Almont for a two-day tournament there. Results from those tournaments will appear in the Feb. 5 edition.
