Rugby High School’s Panther Cross Country team showed their strength to class A competitors at the Jamestown “Orr” iginals Invitational, held at the Parkhurst Recreation Area in Jamestown Aug. 21.

The Panthers placed first among class B schools and fifth overall in the varsity girls’ 5000-meter event, outpacing class A schools Fargo North, West Fargo Sheyenne, Fargo South, Jamestown, Mandan and Devils Lake.

In the varsity boys’ 5000-meter event, Rugby placed eighth, beating all class B competitors and class A schools Jamestown and Fargo South.

The Panthers placed second overall in the JV girls’ 3000-meter event, topped only by Fargo Davies High School. Rugby’s Evyn Jacobson placed first overall in the race.

Rugby’s JV boys teams placed eighth in the 4000-meter event and sixth in the 3000-meter race.

“I was happy with how the kids handled the meet and how they ran,” Panthers Coach Bill Jansen said of the race.

“It is nice to be able to run against class A competition because it adds athletes to the races and gives the kids more runners to run with and pace off of. It’s nice to get our first meet in and a bonus that it was at the state meet site.”
