“Grind” takes Panther wrestlers all over state

Toward the end of their season, North Dakota high school athletes and coaches talk about “getting into the grind,” and Rugby High’s wrestlers are no exception.

For the Rugby Panthers, the “grind” has taken them all over the state in recent weeks. The evening before they traveled more than 100 miles to Stanley, where eight teams would participate in duals for Region 3, Rugby wrestlers and their families traveled just over 40 miles to Harvey, where they met the HWC Hornets and Minot Magicians at Harvey High School for a triangular Feb. 4.

The class A Magicians proved a challenge for both the Hornets and Panthers, who wrestle for class B schools.

In the 126-pound class, Panthers wrestler John Jundt proved he was up to any challenge. Jundt won against competitors from both schools, first by a 5-1 decision over Minot’s Zachary Imler, then by a fall in one minute, 28 seconds over HWC’s Jadyn Vollmer.

The Panthers fell to the Magicians by a 69-15 points margin. They won over HWC, 39-30.

“We’ve put in a lot of miles,” Panthers Coach Craig Zachmeier said after the Feb. 4 event.

“We had some pretty good fights,” Zachmeier said of the triangular in Harvey. “We’re better than we were a month ago, and we’re going to keep building. We’re improving,” he added. “We’re right where I thought we would be.”

Zachmeier said he was pleased with the Panthers’ performance against the Magicians. “We battled with some of their ranked kids and beat some of their ranked kids,” he noted.

Would the grind ahead of state on Feb. 18 take a toll on the Panthers?

Zachmeier said he didn’t think so.

“I’m not too worried about it,” he answered, smiling. “We’ve been going mornings; we’ve been going afternoons; we’ve been on the bus. So, now, it’s a little bit of rest and a little bit of work, but (the energy) is all there,” he said.

“Saturday’s our last competition and then we go to state,” Zachmeier added, looking ahead to Stanley.
