Panthers host Velva, Stanley in wrestling triangular

Sue Sitter/PCT Rugby’s Cole Anderson pins Stanley’s Jonathan Germandson Jan. 7 at the Rugby Triangular.

With a smaller team than in past years, the Rugby Panthers hosted the Velva Aggies and Stanley Blue Jays in a triangular tournament in Rugby High’s Hanneman Gym Jan. 7.

Panthers Coach Craig Zachmeier said before the start of the season he had prepared for fewer students to join the wrestling team than in past years due to COVID-19.

“The numbers are down,” he said after the Jan. 7 tournament.

Nine wrestlers competed for Rugby at the tournament. Three uncontested matches gave Stanley 18 of their 37 team points, while one forfeit gave Velva six of their 46 point total.

John Jundt, who wrestled in the 126-pound division and 152-pounder Austin Schneibel defeated wrestlers from both the Blue Jays and the Aggies.

Cole Anderson saw success in a 160-pound division match against Jonathan Germandson of Stanley. However, Anderson fell to Aggie Kelson Mascol.

“The kids have got a lot of work to do in the next six weeks,” Zachmeier said. “We’ve got the talent there, but we’ll see how they all come together.”

Zachmeier said of the Panthers’ matches so far in the season, “We didn’t do well in our first one. We wrestled well in our second (tournament). Those kids were all bigger than us. We had kids in trouble, but we’ve got to capitalize on it.”

A busy schedule awaited the Panthers after their competition at home. “We’ve got two really hard weeks,” Zachmeier noted.

The Panthers would travel to Casselton for the Central Cass Tournament, then on to Minot’s Bishop Ryan High School for another. Tournaments in Harvey Jan. 12 and Rolla Jan. 15 would follow.

Zachmeier said he hoped the tough tournament schedule would sharpen the wrestlers’ skills.

“Hopefully that will make a difference, with all those extra matches, to push through (and improve) for the next couple of weeks,” Zachmeier said.

“We’re doing a couple of practices a day and then lots of competitions and road time,” he added.
