Wrestlers pin state hopes on Tioga tourney

The Rugby Panther wrestlers went to the mats upstairs in the Rugby High gym as usual Tuesday, practicing moves over the sounds of a Panther basketball game on the main floor.

Their latest practice comes after a dual in Kenmare that Coach Craig Zachmeier described as another chance for practice.

“We didn’t do too bad,” Zachmeier said of the Kemare duals last Saturday. “We dualed Minot-Ryan, we dualed Kenmare, we matched up to get better. So, we wrestled up a few weights and bounced around so we’d get some better matches to get ready for this weekend, which really counts.”

The “match that counts” takes place today in Tioga, where the Panthers compete in the Class B Regionals for Region Three.

“There were nine schools (participating in the Kenmare tourney),” Zachmeier said.

“We would have finished seventh. That doesn’t quite describe how well we wrestled because we bumped around not to win the dual to get individual matches. So, it was more important to get ready for this weekend than last weekend.”

Zachmeier said two wrestlers, Bryson Amyotte and Cole Schneibel, were out with injuries.

Schneibel said he hoped his broken foot would still allow him to participate in today’s regionals. “We’re going to talk about that today,” he said, looking down at the black support boot on his foot.

For the Tioga regionals, Zachmeier said , “We’re getting rid of some of the stuff that doesn’t work in post-season wrestling and we’re putting stuff in that does. So, the stuff they’ve been struggling with, we’ll take out of the arsenal and really concentrate on getting better at the things we’re good at.”
