Panthers first again at Fessenden
A warm, light breeze with scant raindrops provided ideal conditions for Rugby High track and field athletes at the Harvey/Wells County meet Tuesday.
RHS coach Bill Jansen described the day as “nice.”
“We had a good day today. We’re rounding into shape (for the season). We’re getting things qualified that we need to.”
Like last week’s meet at Fessenden High, the Harvey/Wells County meet saw several state-qualifying scores among Rugby athletes.
The Rugby relay team of Keith Vetsch, Devan Michels, Cody Jundt and Corey Mattern finished the 4×100 meter relay with a state qualifying time of 45.20 seconds. Jaden Hamilton earned a state-qualifying score of 6-02.00 in the boys’ high jump event, while Corey Mattern qualified for state in the boys’ triple jump with a distance score of 41-07.50. J.D. Matehs qualified for state with a 15.91 second time in the 110 meter hurdles, when he placed second behind Surrey’s Clay Kummer.
Kristina Brossart finished first in the girls’ 100 meter dash with a time of 12.79 seconds, qualifying for state by one hundredth of a second.
Maria Blessum qualified for state in the girls’ 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.38 seconds, while Anni Stier’s 47.93-second time qualified her for state in the girls’ 300 meter hurdles.
The team of Maria Blessum, Stier, Emily Mattern and Brossart qualified for state in the girls’ 4×100 meter relay with a time of 51.90 seconds.
Brooke Blessum qualified for state in the girls’ high jump with a score of 5-01.00, while Maria Blessum qualified and broke her previous record pole vault distance of 10 feet with a score of 10-06.00. Brooke Blessum also broke a record when she scored a distance of 35-09.5 in the girls’ triple jump, qualifying for state by more than one foot.
Jacoby Glasser’s shot put throw of 36-03.00 also qualified for state.
Rugby again landed in first place for both boys’ and girls’ events in the meet, with the boys’ squad scoring 157 points, and the girls scoring 193.50 points. Athletes from the Pierce County town of Wolford participated with the Rolette/Wolford team, which earned 10th place and 21 points for the boys’ team and 8th place and 34 points for the girls.
