Eleven elementary and high school archers from Wolford competed in the National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament March 22-23 in Minot.

Wolford students participated in two separate archery events at the State Fair Center.

In the bull’s eye event, participants shot at targets from distances of 10 and 15 meters.

Four Wolford archers participated in a second event, called the 3-D event. This event involved shooting life-size models of game and hunting targets.

Team member Sarah Clay told the Tribune, “Every circle has points labeled. For each distance, like for the 10 meter, you shoot five practice arrows, and then you score 15 arrows.”

Teammate Koby Marchus said the tournament gave Wolford School a chance to shine.

“It’s fun,” he said of the competition. Our school doesn’t have a lot of groups (and teams) because we’re such a small school.”

The Wolford team traveled to four tournaments during the 2018-19 season.

Participants scoring in the tournament’s bull’s eye event were: Deborah Clay, 272; Elijah Clay, 276; Reuben Clay, 238; Sarah Clay, 263; Baleigh Conner, 214; Halle Handegard, 227; Koby Marchus, 268; Lane Martodam, 182; Zachary Morrow, 272 and Ryan Slaubaugh, 234.

Participants scoring in the 3-D event were: Halle Handegard, 177; Lane Martodam, 140; Zachary Morrow, 189, and Ryan Slaubaugh, 206.

Wolford Superintendent and team coach Larry Zavada praised the team on the school’s Facebook page.

“The Wolford NASP Team began in September of 2017,” Zavada wrote. ” The archers have made an amazing amount of progress in just over a year and a half. But, more pleasing than the success of the season is the great young people I get to coach.”
