Three place at East-West tourney

Three Rugby High wrestlers placed in the top eight of their weight classes last weekend at the 2019 East-West Tournament, held in New Salem.

In the 126-Pound category, Aden Jensen placed 8th after he won by fall over New Salem-Almont’s Mason Olander in 3:06. Jensen fell to South Border’s Jon Schockley in the quarterfinals, with a time of 5:45. Jensen then won Consolation Round #2 over Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm’s Carl Tjernlund when Tjernlund fell in 39 seconds, before a defeat by decision to LaMoure’s Andrew Hoff (2-0).

Jensen scored 8 team points.

Riley Zachmeier placed first in his category, scoring 26.5 points for his team when he won by fall over Stanley’s Keyton Meiers in 1:11. The 138-pounder won by technical fall over Napoleon’s Levi Lang with a time of 3:49, and won in the semifinal round over Brackin Awender of Oakes by a 17-4 major decision. Zachmeier won the first place match by decision over Carrington’s Lucas Geiszler (9-3).

Brady Volk placed 7th in the 152-Pound category, scoring 9 points for the Panthers when he won by fall over Beulah-Hazen’s Dawson Dutchuk in 3 minutes. Although Carrington’s Tate Hoggarth defeated Volk by technical fall in the championship round in 5:44, Volk won by major decision over Harvey-Wells County’s Carsen Mertz (10-2). Volk then lost by decision to DesLacs-Burlington’s Walter Winkler (4-0) before securing the 7th place spot, defeating Napoleon’s Quinn Lindenberg by major decision (9-0).

Other participants in the tourney include 113-pounder John Jundt, who scored 3 points for the Panthers after he won by fall over Maddock’s Noah Herrington in the first consolation round in 4:09. Jundt fell in 3:02 to Hettinger-Scranton’s Gavin Dalley. Jundt lost by 6-0 decision to Carrington’s Treston Lura in the second consolation round for his weight class.

Riley Odden also scored 3 points for the Panthers when the 120-pounder won by major decision over Stanley’s Justin Germundson (17-7). Hillsboro-Central Valley’s Luke Leshuk defeated Odden by tech fall in 4:05 in the quarterfinals, and fell to Hettinger-Scranton’s Conner Andress in 2:02.

160-pounder Dylan Grove scored 6 points for the Panthers when he won by major decision over New Salem-Almont’s Tyler Selzler (13-3) in the preliminary round. Lisbon’s Jaden Schmidt won by tech fall over Grove in 5:33, while Grove won by fall over Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central’s Andrew Christensen in 1:15. Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm’s Ethan Carruth won by tech fall over Grove in 4:31.

Also participating were 132-pound Wyatt Schmaltz, who fell to New Salem Almont’s Tayt Wolding in 2:50, and DesLacs-Burlington’s Cale Ibach in 4:32, and Isaac Christenson, who fell to Bowman County’s Jacoby Mattern in 1:47, and DesLacs-Burlington’s Weston Walhus in 2:25 in the 145 Pound category.
