Lady Panthers rout Raiders
For Rugby High’s varsity girls’ basketball squad, Monday’s* 90-21 rout of Drake-Anamoose in the RHS gym meant more than another notch in their “win” column it meant more playing opportunities for team members.
Rugby jumped out to dominate the game early in the first quarter, with the Drake-Anamoose Raider girls chasing the fast-breaking Lady Panthers down the court in an effort to keep up. Rugby’s Karsyn Hager, Brooke Blessum and Sarah Blessum made the most of their time on the Panther home court, sinking three 3-point shots and five 2-point shots. Mykell Heidlebaugh and Jordan Senger each sank 2-pointers, while Anni Stier drew a foul on a 2-point shot for an additional 2 points in free throws.
Lady Raiders Emmy Dockter and Brooke Duchsherer put points on the board for their team, with Duchsherer sinking a 3 pointer, and Dockter scoring 2 points on free throws.
The second quarter saw the Lady Panthers grow their 29 point total to 54, as Maria Blessum sank two 3 pointers and a 2 point shot. Mariah Hjelden and Tesha Sobolik each added 3 pointers to the score, and Heidlebaugh added more 2-point shots. Drake-Anamoose fell farther behind, with Bethany Filler sinking a 3 and 2 pointer to total 10 points for the Raiders.
As the third quarter got underway, more girls from both teams left their chairs on the sidelines to switch out with players on the court. Rugby’s Riley Grove drew a foul on a 2-point shot and sank a free throw. More 2 and 3 pointers from Hager and Maria, Brooke and Sarah Blessum boosted the Panther lead to 72-19.
The fourth quarter continued with more player substitutions, and 3 pointers from Sobolik and Isabella McCabe. Riley Grove, Heidlebaugh and Hjelden kept the fast pace going, sinking 2 point shot after shot, bringing the team’s total to 90 points for the evening.
Lady Raiders Dockter, Duchsherer, and Roxy Wagner added 11 more points to their team’s total in the second half, ending the game with 21.
Lady Panther coach Jennifer Brossart told the Tribune, “This was an opportunity for us to get everybody some good playing time, and get some confidence up for girls who’ve been struggling shooting-wise. I think all in all I was happy with their performance tonight.”
Point totals scored by the Lady Panthers were: Hager, 16; McCabe, 15 and Maria Blessum with 11. Brooke Blessum, Sarah Blessum and Tesha Sobolik all scored 8 points for the evening, while Hjelden totaled 7 points. Stier scored 6 points; Grove scored 5 points; Heidlebaugh scored 4 points, and Senger totaled 2 points for the game. Panther Gabi Sullivan has been sidelined with an injury.
Raider points went to Filler with 10, Duchsherer with 5, Wagner with 4, and Dockter with 2.
