Lady Panthers run over Titans
In a visit to the Rugby High School gym Tuesday night, the Towner-Granville-Upham Lady Titans found themselves on the wrong side of 19-0 Rugby Panther run early.
The 19-0 run paved the way for a 27-5 Panther lead at the end of the first quarter; a 46-23 lead at halftime; a 66-34 lead that triggered a running clock fourth quarter; and a 71-40 final score in the Panthers’ favor.
“Offensively, we played like the team we’re capable of,” said Panthers head coach Jen Brossart.
In the first quarter 15 of the Panthers’ 27 points came from outside the arc, with hits from Anni Stier, Karsyn Hager, Maria Blessum and Brooke Blessum. The Titans scored most of their points on the quarter from the charity stripe, with guard Neeleigh Wollenzien going 3-for-4 on two trips.
The second quarter saw the Titans keep pace with the Panthers in scoring, with Rugby outscoring the Titans 19-18 on the quarter.
Hager and Maria Blessum would each add more three-pointers to the Panthers’ stat sheets, while Wollenzien would chip in two threes just a minute apart for the Titans.
The third quarter would see a scoring margin that wasn’t as tight, with the Panthers outscoring the Titans 20-11.
The ensuing quarter would not just see a tight scoring margin, but the only time in which the Titans outscored the Panthers by a 6-5 margin. Wollenzien and center Jaidyn Brummond, who scored the Titans’ 11 points in the third quarter, would be the lone scorers for the fourth quarter as well for their squad.
“Defensively, we gave up more points than we usually do, but sometimes you got to pick the battles you can win and we gotta work on that a little bit,” said Brossart. “But overall I was happy with the effort.”
The Panthers traveled to Mohall last night for a doubleheader with the boys basketball team against the Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood Mavericks.
