Wrestlers place at Velva tournament

Two Panther wrestlers took 1st place last week in a tournament held at Velva High School.

Rugby’s Aden Jensen came in 1st in the 132-pound category when he defeated Cade McCloud of Northern Lights High for the match. Jensen had scored victories in the quarterfinals over Minot High’s Carthan Ternes, and in the semifinals over Carrington’s Morgan Marlow. Carrington’s Ian Lacina fell to Jensen in Round 1 with a time of 1:52; Alex Alefteras of Minot fell to Jensen in Round 2 at 1:21; Kyler Byer fell to Jensen in Round 3 after 3:10; and McCloud went down in a Round 5 decision 7-3. Jensen had a bye for Round 4.

Riley Zachmeier took 1st place in the 138 pound category, defeating Hugo Garcia of Williams County in a Round 2 tech fall, 21-5 at 4:00; Gavin Houle of Northern Lights in a tech fall 17-1 at 1:34; Joel Matehs at 0:48 and Velva’s Braeten Yanish in a tech fall, 16-0 at 3:31. Zachmeier defeated Leighton Tangsrud of Stanley in the quarterfinals, Watford City’s Liam Shannon in the semifinals (tech fall, 16-0 at 3:49) and Carrington’s Lucas Geiszler for the match in a 5-4 decision.

Ridley Odden placed 2nd in the 120 pound category. Odden defeated Jodeci Joern of Minot at 2:00, Gannon Ledoux of Bishop Ryan at 2:21; Maddock’s Noah Herrington at 1:31; Xander Callahan of Minot at 1:20 and Stanley’s Dawson Sessing by rule. Odden defeated Aldren Krueger of Minot at 3:10 in the quarterfinals and Jakob Hudson of Northern Lights in the semifinals at 2:59. Minot’s Victor Garcia took 1st place in the match, defeating Odden at 2:00.

Brady Volk took 5th place in the 160 pound consolation match, defeating Xylis Holter of Minot at 1:24, Bishop Ryan’s Kaleb Beeter in Round 1 at 4:22; Minot’s Tyler Shorb at 3:13 and Nick Fiedler of Watford City in an 18-4 major decision. Carrington’s Michael Clifton defeated Volk in the semifinals by a 7-2 decision, and Velva’s Michael Thomas defeated Volk at 5:17. Volk defeated Larimore’s Austin Steffen for the 5th place rank by a 10-9 decision.

Dylan Grove also placed 5th in his category. Grove defeated Connor Quintarro of Watford City for the 170 pound consolation match and Williams County’s Jevin Damm at 0:46 for the consolation semis. Bishop Ryan’s Cody Luck defeated Grove in a 7-3 decision, and Carrington’s Kaulder Kvamme pinned Grove at 4:26 in the last round of the match before Grove took 5th place overall, defeating Kvamme at 2:31.

Wyatt Schmaltz took 9th place in the 138 pound category, defeating fellow Panther Joel Matehs at 3:40 after falling to Kenmare-Bowbells’ Lathan Stroklund at 1:19, Watford City’s Shannon at 0:57, Stanley’s Tangsrud at 4:41 and Carrington’s Geiszler at 0:25.

Matehs took 10th place overall in the 138 pound category.
