Panthers trounce Sioux, 38-6
The Rugby Panthers found themselves on the right side of a lopsided victory last week on the road.
On the Westhope Softball Field, the Panthers’ double digit scoring in the first half set the stage for a running clock rule being implemented in the second half. The Panthers came away with a 38-6 victory over the Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn Sioux.
The Panthers struck first with quarterback Jaden Hamilton connecting with Devan Michels on a 57-yard pass for a score. Hamilton and Michels would later connect in the second quarter on a short pass.
Turnovers proved costly for the Sioux, with Panthers inside linebacker Brady Volk returning a fumble for a score in the first quarter and strong safety Corey Mattern intercepting a Sioux pass attempt and returning it for 48-yards and the fourth score of the game.
Senior running back Kevin Vetsch would get the fifth and final Panther score of the game on a 76-yard run and the ensuing conversion.
The Sioux were unable to get points on the board until the fourth quarter, with sophomore running back Wyatt Lemay capping a drive from the Panthers’ 45-yard line.
The Panthers stayed home yesterday for the first of two late season home games. On Friday the Panthers hosted the Bottineau Braves, and next week the Panthers will host the Harvey-Wells County Hornets.
The running clock rule is implemented when the point differential after the first half is 30 points or greater. The clock continues to run when the ball goes out of bounds, passes are incomplete, a team gets a first down, and after a touchdown and during the point-after-try (unless the lead is reduced to under 30 as a result).
