Lady Panthers continue winning ways

By Staff | Sep 28, 2018

The RHS Lady Panthers made short work of their game against Drake-Anamoose Tuesday night in the RHS gym, with the Varsity, JV and C-Squad winning all sets and finishing early.

Although the varsity girls usually took the court at 7:00 p.m., their game began almost a half hour early, due to the fast-paced JV win before their scheduled start.

JV Coach Brenda Olson told the Tribune, “Outside of tournament play we took second in the tournament in Bottineau we went 4 and 4 in our next tournament, and we’re undefeated in our regular season so far.”

Olson attributed the quick victory to lots of practice. “We did pretty well tonight. The girls have been working hard on their passing getting the ball to the center, and we did a good job of that tonight, too. That’s our focus now,” she noted.

The JV squad will face the Aggies at Velva High October 2.

“They’re the ones who beat us in the JV tournament up in Bottineau, by a total of two points, to they’ve been very close. So, we’ve been working on the little things to hopefully fix it so we can come away with a win there, too,” Olson said.

The Lady Panthers varsity squad had a strong start in their first set.

“We always seem to struggle our first set, so I was proud of the girls tonight. They came right out of the gates, getting after it,” Varsity Coach Jessica Fritz said.

Although the Lady Raiders struggled in all three sets, they managed a brief rally at the end of the third, scoring three unanswered points when it seemed Rugby would finish them off.

“Drake played a great third set; they came back, they communicated, and they did a lot of really good things. They are a great team, too, and I don’t want to take anything away from them,” Fritz noted.

Rugby would face Newburg-Westhope at home Thursday.

“Hopefully we’ll be ready for that and do well again on Thursday,” Fritz said.

Rugby’s Anni Stier led the ace total for the night with 7; Brianna Leier came in with 5, and McKenzie Harner and Maria Blessum each scored 3. Sarah Blessum, Brooke Blessum and Holly Vetsch each earned 1 ace.

Maria Blessum led in the kills column with 11; Brooke Blessum had 6; Anni Stier had 4, and Kelly Swanson earned 2. Sarah Blessum scored 1 kill for the night.

Brooke Blessum scored 4 blocks for the evening and earned 17 assists, while Maria Blessum earned 1 assist.
