Panthers devour Bearcats in region finale
The Panthers advanced to the State tournament after the North Star Bearcats lost Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers attacked their prey Wednesday in the final game to take their place at State in Jamestown next week after winning 7-5 after six and half innings of play with high winds and 84 degrees temps. The wind made for an interesting day, kicking up dirt at all the bases whether players ran in or slid in, which was a real mess. There was a big turnout for game with Panthers and Bearcats alike.
Both teams played some good baseball and the audience was on its feet roaring more than once. Pitchers starting out were Isaiah Johnson for the Panthers and Tom Nicholaison for the Bearcats. The problem was not with North Star’s Nicholaison’s pitching but with the fact he was limited to 85 pitches in the series, and he’d already done 49 when this game started. After two innings he was replaced by Kaleb Spears, after he walked in a run when bases were loaded.
Spears coming on meant the pitching was changing from a lefty to a right-handed pitcher. With the wind blowing, it changed the game. In the top of the third inning the Bearcats took a hit when Landen Foster had a double play, and the cats had a base run blunder. The Bearcats later had loaded bases and eventually tied Rugby 2-2. At the top of the 4th it was still 2-2 all. The top of the fourth resulted in Rugby striking out the Bearcats one, two and three. At the top of the 5th inning, the Bearcats swung it around with a 4-2 lead when Thomas got in safe, but Nelson missed a touch on the outside of the bag when he slid in to home going out. The Bearcats could not seem to move it after that. In the bottom of the 5th, Seth Jaeger walked, and Mayson McCabe got a double putting a man on second and 3rd, with no one out.
Johnson then drove in two which tied the score 4 4 and the Panthers were back in the game.
The Panthers were to go on to score three more in the bottom of the 6th, and the Bearcats had one score in the game to end it 7-5 Panthers. The Panthers will move on to the State Finals in Jamestown next week.
