Boys, girls track teams win at Velva invite

The Velva Invitational track and field meet was held Tuesday, April 24, on Johnson Field in Rugby.

That afternoon the Rugby Panthers, both boys and girls, were successful with top scoring. Also very good individual results were obtained by the girls with a total of 195.5 points, which put them in first place. The boys had 123 points and also took first.

Panther Maddie Uhlenkamp scored first place in the shot put with a 33 foot 11.25 inches shot. In the discus Maddie threw 108 feet 7 inches for first place as well. In the pole vault, Maria Blessum had a state-qualifying vault of 9 feet. Brooke Blessum took first in the high jump with a 4 foot 11 inch jump, sailing over the pole.

In the 400-meter dash, Anni Stier placed second with a 1 minute 3.26 seconds. Maria Blessum placed first in the 100-meter dash with 17.44 seconds. In the 300-meter hurdles, both Stier and Blessum placed first and second. But it was the Long Jump from Sara Stier that brought the crowd to their feet with a 16 foot 4.5 inch-long jump. Brooke Blessum placed 3rd with a 16 foot 3 inch jump. In the triple jump, both Brooke Blessum and Sara Stier qualified for state with a 34 feet 8.25 inches and 34.5 feet, respectively. Brooke Blessum also finished first in the high jump with a 4 foot eleven inch score.

On the boys side of the action D.J. Schneibel ran away with a quite a few good efforts. In the shot put he threw for 41 feet and .25 inches, placing him in 6th place. In discus, Schneibel threw 32.13, placing him in 9th place, and in the javelin open he threw 27.61 meters-he was in 9th place. Overall he had a great afternoon.
