Bantams take second at state ‘gold’
The Rugby Bantams recently completed their season by competing in the Bantam B “Gold” state tournament in Grand Forks on March 9,10,11. There are also “Silver” and “Bronze” divisions of the Bantam B state tournament.
The team won their first game (quarterfinals) over the Richland Rangers (Sidney, MT) by a score of 4-2. The game was 1-0 for Rugby through 2 periods of play and Rugby out scored Richland 3-2 in the third period to seal the win.
The semi-final game was against nemesis Bismarck Red, a team Rugby had been unable to beat during the regular season. Rugby scored one goal in each period to just one goal scored by Bismarck in the first period to take the game 3-1.
This put the team into Sunday’s Championship game versus the Crosby Comets, an experienced team from the Bantam B western region. The game was 1-0 for Crosby after 2 periods. Crosby scored an additional goal in the third, then netted an open net goal after Rugby pulled their goalie late in the third, giving
Crosby the 3-0 victory over Rugby.
Goalie Robert Dibble stopped 89 of 94 shots during the tournament for a 94.7 percent save percentage. Rugby took home the 2nd place trophy. This ended a very successful season for an overall very young team. They were the Eastern Bantam B regular season league champions with a record of 12 wins, 2 losses to contribute to their total of 27 wins, 15 losses, and 3 ties for the season.
