Panther boys fall to No. 6-ranked Lions
The Rugby Panthers had the lead.
But the Panthers later fell, 68-51, to the No. 6-ranked Bishop Ryan Lions Tuesday evening at Bishop Ryan High School in Minot.
A two-point deficit at the end of the second quarter turned into seven-point deficit by the end of the third, and then into a 17-point deficit at the end of the night.
The Panthers worked up an early lead on an 11-2 run in the first quarter, with eight of the 11 coming from guard Trace Goven. The Lions were unable to get baskets to fall until midway into the quarter, with forward Anthony Vetter getting a bucket and guard Ben Bohl following suit just seconds later. By the end of the quarter, the scoring was 17-13 in the Panthers’ favor.
Missed buckets and turnovers in the second quarter led to both teams going scoreless for nearly three minutes. After two buckets from Bohl the Panthers and the Lions were nearly neck-and-neck for most of the quarter. Going into halftime, the Lions had a 26-24 lead over the Panthers.
The third quarter saw the Panthers and the Lions going neck-and-neck early. However the Lions would later hit two three-pointers and a 1-for-2 trip to the line to give themselves a seven-point lead in the back three minutes. Goven hit a three-point play within the final minute to put the Panthers down by five, but then Vetter beat the buzzer on a bucket to give a seven-point lead back to the Lions.
The Lions then had their largest lead of the night in the final quarter, outscoring the Panthers 20-10.
The back two minutes of the quarter saw Goven hit a second three-point play. Isaiah Johnson would then hit a bucket, and guard Devan Michels would hit a late three-pointer.
The Panthers traveled to Dunseith Friday to take on the Dragons. The next action will be the District 11 Boys Basketball tournament Feb. 23, 24 and 26 in Bottineau.
