Rugby wrestlers compete at Rumble on the Red
Members of the Rugby High School wrestling team competed last week at Rumble on the Red at the Fargodome.
Riley Odden got two wins by pin before falling to Joey Flores (Albert Lea Area, Minn.) in the third round of the 106-pound class championships. Odden then lost by decision to Jamestown’s Joel Bowman in the consolation rounds.
Aden Jensen was sent to the consolation rounds after falling to Dalton Ball (Cambridge-Isanti). Jensen later lost by decision to Oakes’ Conner Burgard.
Riley Zachmeier tech-ed Moo Thaw (Austin) in the first round of the 126-pound championships, but then lost be decision to Mitchel Petersen (Byron) in the second round. Zachmeier then got three decisive victories in the consolation rounds before losing by decision to Sartell-Saint Stephen’s Nick Pelach.
Joey Berg (138) won by decision over Maple Grove’s Tyler Rengel in the first round of the championships. Berg was then sent to the consolation rounds via a loss to Bismarck Legacy’s Chance Davis. In the consolation rounds Berg got two wins before losing by decision to New Salem-Almont’s Josh Irwin.
At 145, Brady Volk got two wins before falling to Hettinger-Scranton’s Ben Dalley in the third round of the championships. In the consolation round Volk lost by major decision to West Fargo Sheyenne’s Lanier Karpeh.
Cole Schneibel (170) pinned Orono’s Adam Kusske for an early win in the championship round. Schneibel was sent to the consolation rounds in a loss to Josh Laleman (Minneota). In the consolation rounds, Schneibel pinned Hettinger-Scranton’s Tommy Buchmeier, but later fell to Jack Wolf (Foley).
DJ Schneibel won by decision over Sisseton’s Kaeden Metz in the second round of the 285 pound championships. He then fell to Trent Esping in the next round. DJ then got two wins in the consolation rounds, both by pin, before losing to Aberdeen Central’s Kaden Johnson.
Rugby wrestlers are competing today in Douglas, Wyo. The next actions for the wrestling team are duels against Linton and Harvey-Wells County on Jan. 11, and a two-day tournament Jan. 12 and 13 all in Rugby.
