The Rugby Panther boys basketball team is 1-0 to start the season.

In their first game of the season, the Panthers won, 70-50, over the Benson County Wildcats.

The Wildcats got the ball first on the tipoff, but it was the Panthers who got on the board first working up a 16-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Guard Landen Foster emerged midway through as a leader on the night for the Panthers, getting 10 of his 19 points by halftime.

For the Wildcats, shots were unable to fall until the 4:51 mark in the first, with center Garret Tandeski who would end the night with a double-double in both scoring (24) and rebounds (10) putting up the first points of the game for his squad and six of the eight points on the quarter for the Wildcats.

Both teams were also bit by the turnover bug, with each netting 10 apiece on the night.

Forward Keaton Nelson opened the next stanza, going 1-for-2 from the foul line. The Panthers had two responses for it, both from Foster. The Panthers would still be ahead going into halftime, 35-19.

The Panthers’ lead continued into the second half, with 55-36 at the end of the third quarter and 70-50 as the final.

The Panthers competed in the CNDC tournament, which finishes today in Rugby. Next action for the Panthers will also be at home, in a double-header with the girls basketball team with both squads taking on Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood on Dec. 22. The varsity girls’ game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. and the varsity boys’ game is slated for 7 p.m. that evening.
