On Saturday, December 2nd, the Rugby Panther girl’s basketball team stomped the Harvey Wells Hornets 52-35 to win the CNDC tournament for the third year straight.

The game started out slow in the first quarter with neither team seeming to gain momentum. At the end of half time the score was tight with Panthers 20 and Hornets 19. It was anybody’s game at that point. But the beginning of the 3rd quarter both teams got into the action, with Rugby scoring another 17 points and the Hornets another 10 points. The end of the third quarter the score was a close 37 -29. Both teams played hard to the finish in the fourth quarter but Rugby’s Panthers prevailed 52 and Hornets losing with 35.

This was the third year consecutive win for the Panthers against the Hornets in the tournament. The Panthers and Hornets fought hard with numerous turnovers, missed free throws and fouls for both teams. In the end, the Panthers prevailed again.

There was a good turnout for both teams Saturday night at the Harvey gymnasium.

The previous night, the Panthers won the TGU Titans in a 48-17 sweep. One obvious thing Friday night the Panthers ran with eagerness and confidence on their faces and seemed to really being enjoying themselves. However, the first quarter had two injured players number 11, Kiara Johnson from the Titans and Brooke Blessum, number 10 from the Panthers. Both players returned to the game later.

In the first round of the tournament, the Panthers defeated the Drake-Anamoose Raiders, 75-15.

The Rugby Panthers girls team now stands 4 0 for the season. Their next game is in Minot on December 8th where they play the Bishop Ryan Lions. On December 12, the Hornets will play the Panthers again at Rugby.

The Central North Dakota Conference Tournament is one of the longer running tournaments in North Dakota Class B Girls Basketball. Next year’s CNDC Girls Basketball Tournament will be held in the Rugby, High School November 29th December 1st, 2018.
