Seven Rugby cross country runners make all-region

Four Rugby girls and three boys took home hardware last week at the Class B East Region cross-country meet in Cooperstown.

Riley Zachmeier (4th – 17:17), Kadin Neppl (10th – 17:55) and Dawson Schepp (15th – 18:11) made all-region for the boys, and Quinn Neppl (5th – 19:36), Ellie Duchscherer (13th – 20:42), Tristin Lunde (16th – 20:57) and Mykell Heidlebaugh (20th – 21:21) made all-region for the girls.

Lunde was also one of three senior athlete nominees for the girls, along with Gracie Wright of Hillsboro-Central Valley and Mikayla Koening of Griggs County Central.

Coach Bill Jansen also took home the coach of the year award for the varsity girls division. Kirk Zink, of Hillsboro-Central Valley, took home the award for the boys division.

Rugby’s varsity girls team placed second, just 10 points behind Hillsboro-Central Valley (76) and 25 points ahead of Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg (111). The varsity boys finished third, 19 points behind Hatton-Northwood-Thompson (83) and 71 points ahead of Pembina County North (173).

The state cross country meet is being held today at 2 p.m. in Valley City.
