Rugby wins double Panther showdown

The Rugby Panthers had one last bit of business in Region 6: A double Panther showdown.

Rugby hosted Glenburn Tuesday evening in the Charles Hanneman Gymnasium.

Rugby won the first set, 25-19. Glenburn had a brief comeback in the second set, winning 25-22. The Panthers then won the two following sets, 25-12 and 25-14.

Outside hitter Maria Blessum led the Rugby Panthers in both kills (14) and digs (27); middle blockers Madison Uhlenkamp and Jacque Blessum had a combined 10 blocks between the two of them; setter Alissa Volk led in assists (13) and outside hitter Sara Stier led in service aces (5).

Sierra Hansen led the Glenburn Panthers in both kills (13) and blocks (5); Kyanne Derr led in assists (15); Isabella Spokely led in service aces and Raylea Folstad led in digs.

District 11 tournament

The District 11 tournament opened Thursday in Towner.

As the top seed, Rugby had a first round bye and on Friday night played the winner of the game between no. 4-seed Towner-Granville-Upham and no. 5-seed Nedrose.

Game one on Thursday saw no. 2-seed Bottineau take on no. 7-seed Westhope-Newburg, and game two saw no. 3-seed Velva go up against no. 6-seed Drake-Anamoose nearly 30 minutes later.

The district tournament will continue Monday (Oct. 30) with the championship and regional qualifying matches.
