9-man football roundup
The North Prairie Cougars are the only Region 4 9-man team remaining in the postseason today.
Fresh off a 64-62 victory last week over the Mott-Regent-New England Wildfire, the Cougars take on New Salem-Glen Ullin the No. 1-seed in Region 5 in a road game at 2 p.m.
The Cougars were the ones who struck first last week, with senior quarterback Austin Soukup finding freshman runner Xavier Mitchell on a 66 yard pass for a score.
The Wildfire would get the first lead of the game on a conversion following a short touchdown run from running back Hunter Crist. The second scoring drive allowed the Wildfire to have a 16-12 lead at the end of the first stanza.
The game would be extremely close following the end of the first half, when the Cougars were only up 32-30.
In the third stanza the Cougars continued their lead. The Wildfire however were able to keep the game to within two on 7 and 11-yard scoring runs and conversions from runner Josh Wallace.
Soukup then closed the third stanza and opened the fourth on keepers.
The Wildfire responded with two scoring runs from Wallace.
The Cougars ended the game with Gabe Leonard finding Soukup on a 30-yard pass.
At the end of the first quarter the St. John Woodchucks were tied with the Shiloh Christian Skyhawks.
But the Skyhawks would be the ones to advance thanks, in part, to scoring 14 unanswered points in the second quarter.
The Skyhawks struck first on a 22-yard pass for a score.
The Woodchucks responded in-kind with senior runner Kyler McGillis capping a drive on a 79-yard run.
The Skyhawks took over in the second quarter, with Canaan Fagerland capping two different drives on one yard scores.
The Woodchucks opened the third quarter with McGillis finding classmate and wideout Dalton Prouty on a 27-yard pass. The Woodchucks wouldn’t score again until the fourth quarter, with McGillis on his feet that time on a 10-yard run.
The Skyhawks came away with a 41-18 victory, which was capped on a 30-yard run by Fagerland.
