VOLLEYBALL: Rugby prevails over Nedrose

By Staff | Sep 15, 2017

Lori Gronvold for the Tribune Panther outside hitter Maria Blessum is in the air during Rugby’s game against Nedrose Tuesday evening.

Facing a district opponent wasn’t a problem for the Rugby Panther volleyball team over their Homecoming Week.

The Panthers won three sets over the Nedrose Cardinals 25-11, 25-16, 25-12.

Four Panthers could be considered killing machines on the stat sheets, with rear hitter Anni Stier getting the most kills with 8, and older sister and outside hitter Sara netting 6. Fellow outside hitter Maria Blessum and middle blocker Maddie Uhlenkamp each had six kills of their own.

Sara Stier and Uhlenkamp were also the two Panthers who got aces.

Nedrose managed eight total kills from outside hitter Mindee Boyce (3) and middle blocker/hitter Alexis Leier. Setter and outside hitter Kaelie Eggen was the sole player for the Cardinals with an ace.

The Panthers faced the Cardinals just a few days earlier in pool play at a tournament in Glenburn, winning two sets. The Panthers also defeated Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood, 2-0, and Minot Sophomores, 2-0, in pool play. In gold play Rugby defeated Dunseith 2-0; Glenburn 2-1; and Kenmare 2-1 to be tournament champions.

The Panthers traveled to Rolette Thursday to take on the Rolette-Wolford Comets, and on Sept. 19 they will travel to Towner to take on another district rival in the Towner-Granville-Upham Titans.
