Volleyball back in full swing

By Staff | Aug 25, 2017

Carissa Mavec/PCT This year’s RHS volleyball team practices for the season, which starts this week, by working on the fundamentals of the sport.

Volleyball season is back in full swing, with 36 girls on the team this year.

Five seniors lead the team, including Jacque Blessum, Maddie Uhlenkamp, Christine Vetsch, Sara Stier and Alissa Volk. Two all-region players are back on the team, including Stier, as well as junior Maria Blessum.

The team gained 10 freshmen, which means that the team will be heavily focusing on the fundamentals of volleyball. “We’ll be hitting fundamentals again and getting those things under control early so that we can do different things throughout the season,” Coach Jessica Fritz said. “We do that to remind the older girls how to use those skills, but also to teach our philosophy and how we run things to the younger players.”

After last year’s season finish as the runner-up at regionals, the team has a goal to win the region and make it to the state tournament this year.

“We see a lot of depth from our 9-12 graders, and it will be [a great year] for us,” Fritz said.

The team will be attending the Early Bird Tournament in Bottineau this weekend, with its first official game of the regular season on Tuesday in Cando against North Star.
