Three wrestlers who have been prominent figures on the Rugby squad placed in the top three in their respective weight classes at the Central Cass tournament last week.

At 113 pounds, Riley Zachmeier took first place in a decisive victory against Coy Awender of Oakes. To advance, Zachmeier defeated Pembina County North’s Ashton Johnson by fall, Lisbon’s Averey Dick by major decision and New York Mills’ Carter Haman also by fall.

One-hundred and thirty-two pound junior Joey Berg had decisive victories against Oakes’ Marc Seyer, Barnesville’s Caleb Stetz and Britton-Hecla’s Preston Jones before advancing to the finals. Berg was defeated in nearly two minutes by LaMoure’s Chris Heyd.

A loss in the semifinal round to Hillsboro-Central Valley’s Luke Hastings sent 152-pound junior Kaden Hunter into the consolation bracket and in the hunt for third place. Jager would ultimately get third, defeating a familiar opponent in Pembina County North’s Tristen Sott by decision.

Rugby wrestlers competed on their home turf Friday and finish that tournament today. The next action for the wrestlers include a quadrangular at Des Lacs-Burlington on Jan. 20 and a one-day tournament in Rolla the next day.
