Drake-Anamoose's Samantha Martin (black, no. 10) tries to block a jumper from Rugby's Madison Uhlenkamp Monday. The Panthers defeated the Raiders, 83-14.

Monday evening’s game between the Rugby Panthers and the Drake-Anamoose Raiders was a heavily one-sided affair.

And it was one-sided from the tipoff, as the Panthers outscored the Raiders, 83-14.

While both teams were relatively young-Rugby having only one senior in center Breanna Thompson, Drake-Anamoose having three in center Kenzie Volochenko and guards Carrie Bartz and Samantha Martin-the Raiders were at a severe height disadvantage with only one player (Volochenko) over 5’5″. Meanwhile the shortest players for the Panthers, all sophomores at the guard position, were 5’6″ (Anni Stier) and 5’7″ (Jordan Senger and Maria Blessum) and the tallest (Thompson) was 6’1″.

Using their height, the Panthers were able to get a majority of their points on the night from inside, with the exception of a couple long-range two-point makes from Senger, and three-pointers from Blessum and classmate Karsyn Hager.

Center Madison Uhlenkamp and Thompson both had impressive quarters, with the former scoring 20 points combined in the first and third quarters, and Thompson leading the pack in the second quarter.

Turnovers and missed buckets marred the Raiders, as they were only able to score nine points in the first half and five in the second. Volochenko got the first points for the Raiders with 4:48 remaining in the first quarter on a three-point play. Bartz would then get two more to go down less than a minute later.

The second half saw Martin and freshman forward Emmy Dockter contribute to the Raiders alongside Volochenko, but it wasn’t enough to negate a running clock fourth quarter.

Monday marked the third game on the season the Panthers played against District 11 opponents, with the Panthers coming off a 52-44 win against the Westhope-Newburg Sioux last week.

The Panthers’ next action against District 11 foes include playing host to the Bottineau Stars on Jan. 20 (4:15 p.m. start), and trips to Nedrose (Jan. 23, 5:45 p.m. start) and Velva (Jan. 26, 4:15 p.m. start).

The Panthers also play in Rolette on Tuesday.
