By Staff | Dec 16, 2016

The Panthers had their first loss on the season last week in a home bout against the Bishop Ryan Lions.

An up-and down first quarter saw the Panthers down by a bucket. Center Breanna Thompson, the squad’s lone senior, put the Panthers up first. Lions’ center Bridget Macleod responded just seconds later on a drive.

Turnovers and missed buckets hit both teams, affecting makes until the 4:30 mark in the first quarter, with forward Madison Uhlenkamp netting her only bucket of the game. Lions forward Annika Stewart responded soon after. Just seconds later, Macleod would give the Lions their first lead on the night. Last second scores by Emma Passa, and Panther guard Anni Stier saw the Panthers down 8-6 at the end of the first.

Stewart then put up the first points of the second quarter for the Lions, where the up and down game would continue. The Panthers would then get the ball back, with Thompson being sent to the foul line where she was 3-5 on the night.

The Lions then saw forward McKinlee Harmon make the first of two threes on both the night and quarter.

Stier and forward Tristin Lunde both shot to get the Panthers closer, and Stier would then shoot a long two to tie. Stewart then took the lead back for the Lions, but Lunde would tie the game up again on a layup. Harmon then made the second three-pointer to snatch the lead back. Harmon and Lunde’s last second makes saw the Panthers down 15-11 at the end of the half.

The second half saw low-scoring quarters, as missed buckets hindered both teams. The Panthers only made three points in the third quarter, coming solely from Lunde on the perimeter.

In other action the Panthers defeated CNDC tourney rivals the Harvey-Wells County Hornets 45-37 Tuesday in regular season play. The Panthers’ next action is a home game against Rolla Tuesday, Dec. 20; a double-header with the boys basketball team in Mohall on Dec. 22; and a game against a regional opponent the Our Redeemer’s Christian School Knights before the end of the year.
