Wrestlers place at Velva tourney

Two Rugby High School wrestlers won out during the first tournament of the season last week in Velva.
At 113 pounds, sophomore Riley Zachmeier defeated Bishop Ryan’s Conner Ledoux for a first place finish. Zachmeier defeated all of his prior opponents to advance, including MonDak Thunder’s Logan Berg and Williams County’s Ethan Wonser and Canvas Sanders by fall, and Bishop Ryan’s Kersey Harris by major decision.
Also taking first was junior Joey Berg (138#), who defeated New Town’s Joseph George by fall to win.
Taking second place in their respective weight classes were Brady Volk, who lost to Carrington’s Austin Hendrickson; and Kaden Jaeger, who lost by decision to Beulah-Hazen’s Tyler Erickson.
DJ Schneibel took fifth place, defeating Larimore’s Tucker Renfrow by major decision.
Taking seventh place were Landon Rost and Aiden Jensen.
The wrestling team competed in a triangular in Rugby on Thursday and at a meet in Kenmare on Friday. The next action for the wrestlers is a tournament in Linton on Dec. 16-17.
