Rugby Panthers win CNDC Tournament
The CNDC Girls Basketball Tournament held last weekend brought a victory to the Rugby Panthers.
With a landslide win against Rolla on Thursday, December 1, Rugby glided through the first round of the tournament with confidence and the boost they needed to pull through to the end of the weekend.
The first game had Rugby in the lead with a final score of 80-16 against Rolla. In the first period, Rugby dominated with consecutive shots, scoring 26 points to Rolla’s five. Rugby continued to gain momentum in the second quarter, bringing the score to an amazing 54 points while Rolla stayed at the bottom of the scoreboard with five points. In the third quarter, Rolla finally brought the team score up to 13 but trailed behind Rugby by 65 points. Rugby only scored two foul shots in the final quarter of the game, but with a final score of 80, the team pulled an easy win.
In day two of the tournament, Rugby faced Glenburn. The game was close, overall, with both teams playing to win. In the end, Rugby got the win with a score of 42-36. Glenburn, who held eight points to Rugby’s five, led the first quarter of Friday’s game. Rugby came back in the second quarter, gaining the lead with 20 points and leaving Glenburn behind with 14. In the second half, Rugby continued to score, ending the third quarter with 33 points. Rugby was able to pull nine more points in the fourth and final quarter, cinching the win with a six-point lead.
In the final tournament round on Saturday night, Rugby played its long-time CNDC Tournament rival, Harvey-WC. It was a grueling game, with both teams’ players looking to win and playing their absolute best until the end. Harvey-WC gave Rugby a hard time throughout, but it was Rugby who came out on top with a 57-44 win. Rugby held the lead all four quarters of the game, despite the challenging efforts of the opponent.
Rugby’s top players included Maddie Uhlenkamp, Karsyn Hager, Tristin Lunde, Breanna Thompson, Anni Stier and Maria Blessum.
The tournament ended with Uhlenkamp having an overall total of 48 points, Hager with a total of 29 points, Lunde and Thompson with 26 points each, Stier with 20 points, and Blessum with 14 points.
Other members of the team included McKenzie Harner, Jordan Senger and Whitney Gronvold.
