Panthers start Region 6 volleyball tournament off strong, then stumble
The Rugby volleyball team had an upsetting ending in the region tournament last week in Minot. After winning both Monday and Tuesday nights’ games, the Panthers lost to Our Redeemer’s Christian School on Thursday night.
Tuesday’s game saw success against their District 11 rival Velva-Sawyer, with the Panthers fighting through a 5-game match to pull a win.
The Panthers started the game off strong, building a nine-point lead in the first set.
In the second set, the Velva-Sawyer Aggies came back to gain a seven point lead against Rugby, ending with the Aggies winning the set.
Rugby players countered in the third set, gaining leads and playing their hardest to beat their rival. The Panthers came out of the set three with a six-point lead win, but the Aggies used the fourth set to their advantage, winning 25-18.
In the fifth and final set, both teams tried to reach the next level of competition, but it was Rugby who moved on in the end. Sophomore Maria Blessum scored a total of five kills in the fifth game, which allowed the team its five-point win against the Aggies.
The Panthers knew going into Thursday’s game that it would be tough, considering that Our Redeemer’s Christian School has won the region title four times out of the past five seasons.
The ORCS Knights pulled through a 3-0 win against the Panthers, winning 25-9, 25-16, 25-11. This will be Our Redeemer’s Christian School’s third consecutive trip to the state tournament.
