Babe Ruth season opens with victory

By Staff | Jun 10, 2016

The Babe Ruth team in Rugby began their summer season with a victory over Rolette/Rolla this past Monday at Northern Lights field. Rolette/Rolla struck in the top of the first, taking a 3-0 lead as their first three hitters reached base and came around to score. This did not seem to bother Rugby too much as they countered with three themselves to tie things up at three a piece after one inning. Rugby would add four more runs in the bottom of the second and another in the fourth inning to make it eight straight unanswered runs. R/R scored once more in the top of the sixth to end the scoring at 8-4.

“I thought Isaiah (Johnson) pitched well after a shaky first inning,” commented Coach Kipp Johnson, “he had not pitched for a few weeks and seemed a little rusty but was helped out by a solid day at the plate by Shayden Luna.”

Johnson did end up pitching 4 innings while Luna pitched the final 3. Luna’s day at the plated was a solid 3/3 with three doubles and three runs scored. Other offensive highlights for Rugby include Devin Michaels driving in two runs, Kelby Gingerich was 2/3 with an RBI and Mason McCabe went 1/3 with an RBI and run scored.

It was a good start to the season for the local Babe Ruth team. “We have a fair amount of new faces and have not been able to get in too much practice time due to the success of the High School season,” stated Coach Johnson, “the older kids will need to understand that they will have to lead this summer.” Mitch Grochow and Zach Leer are also helping coach this summer as the Rugby Babe Ruth team will be back in action on Monday, the 13th, at Dunseith after they had played at Bottineau on Thursday. All of these regular season games are apart of the Turtle Mountain Babe Ruth League.
