Ball Bounces Other Way For Rugby Baseball

By Staff | May 6, 2016

Shaydon Luna (33) bats for Rugby as they play Larimore Polar Bears Saturday at the Carrington/New Rockford Jamboree, April 30, 2016.

The Rugby Panther baseball squad was in action last weekend at the Carrington/New Rockford jamboree. On Friday, April 29th, the Panthers split a pair of games at the Carrington ballpark, as they defeated Mid-Kota/Dakota Prairie 4-1 then dropped to host Carrington 5-2. In the first game, the Panther bats erupted for their four runs in the bottom of the third, all coming with two outs, for the victory. After a short break, Rugby ran into trouble early against Carrington as the Cardinals got a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and did not like back in the 5-2 win. Middle of the order, SR Hunter Hager and classmen Evan Burckhard, led the Panthers offensively on the first day of the jamboree. Hager was 2/3 with three RBIs in the two cominbed games, while Burckhard was 2/4 with a run scored and run driven in.

Then on Saturday, April 30th, the Rugby squad was in New Rockford. An unfortunate theme for the Panthers was being walked off on, as both games ended with the other team at the plate. Game one was a thriller with Larimore. The Polar Bears got the winning run in extra innings to take the game 7-6. Rugby once again had a short break then took on host New Rockford in the night cap. It was 2-2 heading into extras when New Rockford got the bases loaded with nobody out, and eventually had the winning run cross the plate. Burckhard had another fine day at the plate going 4/6 and driving in four runs.

All in all, despite going 1-3 in the jamboree, Rugby played decent baseball but couldn’t come up with the timely hit. Panthers were in action vs Bottineau on Thursday, as well as today in Minot and have a busy week ahead. On Monday, they will travel to Cando to take on North Star then to Harvey Thursday to take on the Hornets. Both of those are regional games. Rugby stands at 3-8 on the season, 1-2 in region play.
