Track: Girls second, boys fifth at Washburn
The Rugby High School girls’ track team managed a second place finish last week at the Southern McLean Invitational in Washburn.
The team added another state qualifier in Kristina Brossart, who took first in the 100-meter dash (12.71 seconds). Sara Stier, who qualified for state previously at the Clark & Sharon Lloyd Memorial, qualified again in triple jump.
Brossart also took third in the 200-meter dash.
Brossart and Sara Stier were part of the third-place 4×100 relay team, along with Lauren Kraft and Anni Stier. Anni, Kraft, Brossart and Tristin Lunde were part of the second place 4×200 team.
Another first place finisher was Ellie Duchscherer, who completed the 3200-meter run in 13:43.81 minutes.
The boys took fifth, behind Beulah.
The team had a couple first place finishers of their own in Ryan Michels (high jump, 6’2″) and Tyler Schmaltz (400-meter dash, 55.49).
The boys had strong showings in relays- taking second in the 4×200 and 4×400 and third in the 4×100- and in the 3200-run (Dawson Schepp, 11:01.16).
Carrington dominated the tournament, scoring 156 for the girls and 126 for the boys.
Rugby will compete today and Tuesday at meets on their own turf. They will then be on the road Thursday, May 5, and Saturday, May 7, traveling to meets in St. John and Carrington.
