Baseball: North Prairie Tops Rugby

By Staff | Apr 29, 2016

On a cold and blustery Tuesday afternoon, the Cougars of North Prairie (Rolla/Rock Lake/Rolette/Wolford) picked up the offense during the later innings in a 9-6 victory over Rugby.

The Panthers had a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 5th inning, but ran into trouble as the Cougars scored three runs to tie the game, then added three more in the bottom of the 6th. Panthers had opportunities to get out of those two respective innings, but errors in the field hindered them. “We are capable of playing at a higher level,” mentioned Rugby co-head coach Kendall Schieve, “just not making enough plays defensively right now.”

Despite the weather, both sides picked up a multitude of hits, North Prairie collected 16 hits in the game, while Rugby had 11. Individually, the Cougars were led by SR Jalen Pfeifer who was 3/4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, which came on a 2-run home run, and fellow classmate Jake Loing drove in three runs. Rugby was lead by the Johnson boys, SO Isaiah was 3/4 with a run scored and JR Anders went 3/4 with two RBIs.

Rugby SR Evan Burckhard went the distance on the mound, striking out five and did not walk a batter in the loss while North Prairie had three pitchers on the mound throughout the game. Pfeifer ended up the winning pitcher, shutting the door over the last two innings.

Both teams are in action this weekend at the Carrington/New Rockford jamboree, Rugby playing on Friday and Saturday while North Prairie will be in action on Saturday only at the jamboree.
