Golf To Tee Off Next Week
The Rugby High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams have their first meets of the season next week, with the boys competing in Velva on April 7, and the girls competing in Underwood the next day.
Girls coach Leah Johnson said that this year will be a competitive one regionally. Some teams are seeing numbers decline with the rising popularity of fast-pitch softball, and some schools in the region no longer have a girls’ golf team as a result.
“But that also means that every meet is anyone’s to win,” Johnson said.
Johnson said that this year’s team is also a young team, with the loss of six girls from the class of 2015 who had been playing since they were in junior high. The team returns senior Breanna Deaver and sophomores Maria Mack, Jacque Blessum and Allyson Kleespie to the varsity level. There are also several junior high girls golfing this year, including eighth graders Kelsie Ebach, Alyson Mundahl and Morgan LaRocque and seventh graders Bella McCabe, Tesha Sobolik, Riley Grove and Sara Blessum.
The boys are looking to get back to state this year, after what coach Gary Myhre called a “disappointing” end at the regional tournament.
The team graduated three seniors with experience at the state tournament level.
But Myhre said senior Levi Pollman returns this year, and that he is “excited” about a core of juniors, including returning letterers Benjamin Hershey and Kyle Lashman, as well as Brett Berginski, Thor Skjelver and Jacob Christianson. Myhre also said the team has a “good core” of freshmen in Kevin Vetsch, Logan Demontigny, Mayson McCabe and Wyatt Schmaltz, and sophomores, including Brock Haakenson and Alex Hoffert.
Myhre said the boys are in a competitive region, one that also includes the two-time defending state champion Northern Lights.
