Berg, Zachmeier Place at East-West Tourney

Riley Zachmeier won again.
The 106-pound freshman took first place last week at the East-West tournament.
Zachmeier defeated Hettinger’s Mason Defoe in a sudden victory to advance to the first place matchup, where he had another sudden victory over Coy Awender (Oakes). Zachmeier also felled two of his opponents – Grayson Pease (Des Lacs-Burlington) and Jayden Hicks (Killdeer) – within seconds.
At 126, Joey Berg lost in the first round of the championship by an 11-5 decision to Carrington’s Tyler Hoggarth. Berg then bounced back in the consolation rounds, defeating Trevor Harstad (Stanley) by a 5-0 decision and Mason Merck (Bishop Ryan) in a sudden victory. Berg later took seventh place, defeating Ethan Lagge (Beulah-Hazen) in a 5-1 decision.
At 132, Dylan Grove defeated Hunter Hennings (Hillsboro) after losing to Jared Kaseman (South Border) by fall.
At 182, DJ Schneibel felled Cody Ruden (Stanley) at the 50-second mark in the consolation rounds. Schneibel lost to Shane Forester (New Salem-Almont) by fall.
At 220, Spencer Koehmstedt defeated Josh Erflie (New Salem-Almont) to advance to the quarterfinal round. Koehmstedt then lost to Colbey Steeke (Hettinger) by fall and was on the wrong side of a sudden victory by Max Defender (Northern Lights).
Rugby wrestlers began regional tournament season today at Des Lacs-Burlington. Next week there will be another regional tournament in Velva. The state tournament takes place Feb. 18-20 at the Fargodome.
