Wrestling: Four Place At Northern Lights Tourney

Four Rugby High School wrestlers placed high last week at a tournament in Rolla.

At the Northern Lights Invitational, Riley Zachmeier (106#) took first; Joey Berg (126#) and Dylan Grove (132#) both took second; and Spencer Koehmstedt (220#) took third.

In the semifinal round, Zachmeier defeated Chase Burke (Bishop Ryan) by fall nearly three minutes into the match. Zachmeier then defeated Connor Ledoux (Bishop Ryan) in the championship by major decision.

Berg defeated Michael Schill (Pembina County North) by a 5-0 decision to advance to the semifinals, where he then beat Konner Elliot (Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg) by fall at the 4:34 minute mark. Berg then fell to Brett Verville (Pembina County North) in the championship round.

After a quarterfinal round bye, Grove defeated Peyton Witt (Kenmare-Bowbells) in the semifinals. Grove and Witt previously squared off the day before in Rugby, with Grove walking away with a win. At the tournament, Grove won the tiebreaker. He then fell to Gage Litton (Pembina County North) in the first place match.

Koehmstedt fell to Michael Lafferty (Pembina County North) in the quarterfinal round. He then bounced back, defeating Ryan Moen (Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg) by a 3-0 decision. In the match for third place, Koehmstedt got the tiebreaker over Max Defender (Northern Lights).

The tournament saw Landon Rost come to the mat. Rost lost to Defender and Moen, both matches by fall.


Rugby competed in a triangular on its home turf against Des Lacs-Burlington and Kenmare-Bowbells.

At 106, Zachmeier felled Nicolai Topolski in 1 minute, 46 seconds.

At 120, Brady Volk defeated Lyle Pedlar (Des Lacs-Burlington) by a 12-5 decision. He lost to Skylar Ford (Kenmare-Bowbells) by a 15-11 decision.

Berg defeated both his opponents on the night: Coy Spooner (Des Lacs-Burlington) by 5-2 decision and Tyler Burtch (Kenmare-Bowbells by a 14-1 major decision.

Grove lost to Walter Winkler by 7-2 decision.

At 152, Collin Kraft lost to Colton Miller (Des Lacs-Burlington) by fall at the 1:33 mark.

At 160, Cole Schneibel defeated Zane Miller (Kenmare-Bowbells) by fall in 52 seconds. He lost to Madison Kampman (Des Lacs-Burlington) by fall.

DJ Schneibel (182#) lost to Ty Jesz (Kenmare-Bowbells) by fall around the 5:14 mark. Jesz defeated Schneibel again in the Northern Lights Tournament, also by fall.

Koehmstedt wrestled at 285 for a match against Kenmare’s Trenton Kohler. Koehmstedt won by fall around the 5:44 mark.

The event was supposed to be a quadrangular, but MonDak Thunder was unable to attend.

The wrestling team is competing today at a New Salem-Almont tournament, and have one more regular season match (Turtle Mountain, Thursday, Feb. 4) before regional tournaments begin next weekend in Des Lacs-Burlington.
