Wrestlers Place at Home Tourney

Four Rugby High School wrestlers placed in a tournament on their home turf last weekend.

At 106, Riley Zachmeier defeated Conner Ledoux (Bishop Ryan) in a 6-1 decision for a third place-finsh. Zachmeier defeated Frank Chapman (Turtle Mountain) and Jacob Hudson (Northern Lights) by fall, and Cody Rudolph (Stanley, 7-2 decision) before losing in the semifinals to Linton-HMB’s Chandler Nagel by 5-4 decision. Zachmeier then bounced back, defeating Turtle Mountain’s Kolyn Eli to get to the third place round.

At 126, Joey Berg took eighth place, losing to Trevor Harstad (Stanley) by a 6-2 decision. After a first round bye, Berg defeated Tyler Selzler (New Salem-Almont) in the second round. He then lost to Branden Burtch (Kenmare-Bowbells) by 6-3 decision. Berg then defeated Chance Brunelle (Turtle Mountain) to start the consolation round.

At 182, DJ Schneibel took eighth, losing to Thayne LaRocque (Turtle Mountain) by major decision. After a first round bye, Schneibel felled Brandon Melsted (Pembina County North). After falling to Shane Forester (New Salem-Almont), Schneibel defeated Velva’s Graydon Olson.

Wrestling at 220, Spencer Koehmstedt defeated Dillon Knudson (Central Cass) by a 6-4 decision for a fifth-place finish. The matchup was an avenging round, as Koehmstedt lost to Knudson in the quarterfinal by a 3-2 decision. Koehmstedt defeated Louis DeCoteau (Turtle Mountain), Josh Erflie (New Salem-Almont) and Andrew Vetter (Linton-HMB), all by fall. His only other loss on the tournament was to Tioga’s Jaryn Rasmussen.

Also wrestling for Rugby were Nathanial Johnson (106#, 1-2 on the tournament), Jadyn Mack (106#), Wyatt Schmaltz (113#), Brady Volk (120#), Dylan Grove (132#, 1-2 on the tournament), Collin Kraft (152# 1-2) and Cole Schneibel (160#).

The wrestling team competed against Des Lacs-Burlington, Kenmare-Bowbells and MonDak Thunder on Friday in Rugby. They are competing today in a tournament in Rolla.
