Rugby Girls Surge Past Sawyer 72-37
A tight affair after the first quarter turned into a rout last Thursday, the 14th, for the #2-ranked Rugby Girls Basketball team. Sawyer held a 1 point lead, 14-13, after the opening quarter but it was all Panthers after that. The Flashes came into the contest averaging 63 pts on offense, but had a hard time against Rugby, who limited Sawyer to 9 points in the second quarter and had a 37-23 lead at the break.
“It was a great defensive effort by the girls,” noted Coach Jen Brossart. The second half belonged to Rugby, who outscored Sawyer 35-14 and kept the transition game of the Flashes from breaking out. Coach Brossart spoke about the game plan heading into the contest for the Panthers, “we knew their game was to transition to offense quickly, that meant we need to control the tempo and we did.”
On the offensive side for Rugby, they had 6 girls score 6 points or more, including 3 players in double digits. It was the 3rd game in a row that Rugby posted over 70 points. Senior Shea Heidlebaugh poured in 19, sophomore Maddie Uhlenkamp had 17 and junior Breanna Thompson chipped in 10 for Rugby, who remained undefeated in District 11 play (4-0) as well as overall (12-0).
The Panthers wrap up District play this upcoming week, at home on Monday vs. Nedrose and then welcome in Velva on Thursday, a potential winner-take-all game for the regular season District title. The Panthers have just a few games left overall, and are a fun team to watch.
